Chapter 13

Reade

I’ll have to call Dr. Adkins and get her to restrict Terra’s access to Pinterest. This dinner is terrible. I don’t understand how anyone can completely ruin meat, but unluckily for me, Terra can. Of all the females on Earth, I get the one who likes her meat well done. I swear there wasn’t a lick of blood left in any of the meat. I literally had to choke down what would have been a delicious roast if she hadn’t destroyed it.

To make matters worse, she seems to live on lettuce and vegetables, peasant food on Centuria. It’s insulting to watch her eat. She killed my roast and then didn’t touch an ounce of meat. A body’s not meant to survive without protein—human or Centurian.

The food on Earth is sub-par and if she overcooks everything, the next year will be torture. I can’t believe the Agency picked Earth for my protection, and to add insult to injury, went against my wishes, stuck me in America. If it had been any of the British Isles or a Nordic Country, I would have farm fresh produce and meat available to me, not this days-old processed crap they have here in the States.

My family estate in Meilleure has the freshest food. It’s grown by people who live on the estate, and they deliver only the best of the harvest and hunt to our chef. A master of culinary arts, he and his staff create the finest dishes for my family.

The anger boils in me. I’m in this damn situation because of a female. One I’d thought cared about me. Kaliona and I had been lifelong friends. Our fathers’ businesses brought them to the same trade conventions. Over the years, our families had met, socialized, and grown close. I remember running the halls of the great trade centers with Kaliona and her siblings when we were children.

When my father made an offer for the technology her father’s company was developing, it was logical that I be the one to go negotiate the deal. It was wonderful seeing her and her family again after all these years. For me, the evenings we shared were that of old friends drinking and telling stories. I still can’t see how she interpreted those nights as anything more. My frustration boils to the surface thinking about the past four months.

First came the ‘he said, she said’ accusations and posturing back and forth between us, ending in her leveling a charge of espionage on me. If you had come to me months ago and told me my best childhood friend would betray me, I’d have laughed in your face. Never in my wildest dreams would I believe her father would order me to stand trial on his planet. Then contract assassins to hunt me down when my father and I refused to comply. None of this makes sense, even though I know it to be true.

The unbearable shame I brought to my father and family dishonoring our name and our reputation called into question.
